Title

EXPLORING THE THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL OF PANCHAKARMA IN TREATING VATA-KAPHAJA GRIDHRASI: A CASE STUDY

Abstract

Background: Gridhrasi, categorized as a Vata Nanatmaja Roga in Ayurveda, is characterized by symptoms such as Ruja (pain), Toda (pricking sensation), and Stambha (stiffness), which initially manifest in the Sphik (buttocks) and subsequently radiate from the Kati Pradesha (lower back) to the Pada (foot). From a contemporary medical standpoint, this condition corresponds to Sciatic Neuritis. While the lifetime prevalence of low back pain ranges between 50-70%, sciatica attributable to lumbar disc prolapse is observed in 4-6% of the population. Objective: The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of Ayurvedic interventions, with particular emphasis on the therapeutic application of Swedana in conjunction with Shamana Aushadhi, in the management of Vata-Kaphaja Gridhrasi. Materials and Methods: The study presents a case report concerning a 34-year-old male patient who presented to the Panchakarma Outpatient Department with complaints of low back pain, described as pricking in nature, radiating to the left lower limb associated with heaviness of left lower limb. The condition had persisted for one year, and the patient had been clinically diagnosed with L4-L5 and L5-S1 radiculopathy. A comprehensive 15-day Panchakarma treatment protocol, centred around Swedana therapy, was administered. Results: Swedana has been identified as a cornerstone therapy for conditions associated with Vataja and Vata-Kaphaja pathologies. The implementation of this therapeutic modality facilitated substantial symptomatic relief and markedly enhanced the patient’s overall quality of life within a short span of time.
