Depending on the needs and objectives of an individual, variations in methodologies can be observed across different branches of science. However, a common underlying thread among all of them is the effort to identify the factors responsible for a particular action or outcome. This is fundamentally the ‘cause and effect’ principle, which forms the cornerstone of all human endeavors in the pursuit of knowledge. This same curiosity and quest for understanding led to the emergence of Ayurveda. The ancient seers of Ayurveda possessed deep insight and observed various natural phenomena, striving to uncover the rationale behind them. In Ayurvedic philosophy, effects or actions are referred to as Karya, while their causes are known as Karana. The unchanging and absolute (Nirapavada) relationship between Karana and Karya is the foundational principle upon which the entire framework of Ayurveda rests. Ayurveda’s achievements are largely based on the identification and analysis of six Karana Dravyas, which are also discussed in other philosophical systems under the term Shat Padarthas. While there is no major conceptual difference between the two, their practical application and significance within Ayurveda set them apart from the interpretations in other philosophical traditions (Darshanas).
