Title

RELATIONAL STUDY BETWEEN B.Ed. STUDENT-TEACHERS’ ATTITUDE TOWARDS COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between B.Ed. student-teachers’ attitudes towards communication skills and their socio-economic status in Bengaluru District, focusing on the impact of gender, type of college management. A sample of 100 student-teachers from various B.Ed. colleges in Bengaluru was chosen through stratified random sampling, ensuring a diverse representation across different socio-economic backgrounds and educational settings. To assess the attitude of B.Ed. student-teachers towards communization skills, Communication Skills Attitude Scale (CSAS) developed by Rees, Sheard and Davies (2002) was considered along with personal Data information was collected from student-teachers. The statistical techniques namely Coefficient of Correlation and Independent samples ‘t’ test was applied with the help of SPSS Package and level of significance was fixed at 0.05 and 0.01 level of confidences. The analysis indicates a significant correlation between socio-economic status and attitudes towards communication skills. Students from higher socio-economic backgrounds exhibited more positive attitudes, likely due to better access to educational resources and exposure to effective communication practices. Differences in attitudes were also observed based on gender, with female student-teachers generally showing a more positive attitude towards communication skills compared to their male counterparts. The type of college- private aided and unaided was another critical factor. Student-teachers in private unaided institutions reported the highest levels of confidence and positive attitudes towards communication skills, followed by those in aided colleges. This trend can be attributed to the varying levels of resources, training and support provided by these institutions. Furthermore, the chosen method of specialization in B.Ed. programs influenced attitudes. Students specializing in methods that emphasized interactive and communicative teaching techniques demonstrated more favorable attitudes towards communication skills. This study highlights the need for targeted interventions to support student-teachers from lower socio-economic backgrounds and those in aided colleges, emphasizing the importance of equitable access to resources and comprehensive training in communication skills across all educational settings. Such measures are vital for enhancing the overall quality of teacher education and preparing future educators to effectively engage with diverse student populations.
