Title

Aviation English as a Lingua Franca for Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers: Problems, Issues, and Challenges for Indians

Abstract

Aviation English is a globally accepted aviation language named by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) because it is essential for maintaining safety between pilots and air traffic controllers (ATCs). Learning Aviation English proves challenging for Indian pilots and controllers because of their native differences in phonetic systems and grammar rules from their respective languages, limited contact with English throughout their development, and scarce exposure to English communication. The problems worsened due to the following primary factors: educational differences between urban and rural regions, cultural communication preferences, and deficient training resources. The execution of ICAO Language Proficiency Requirement (LPR) assessments and code-switching-related linguistic interference increases the difficulties in maintaining compliance. This study examines safety risks due to linguistic differences using two aviation incidents in 1996 and 2010, as well as current DGCA statistics. This paper identifies accent purification-based training, artificial intelligence language support, uniform assessment protocols, and culture-sensitivity education to bring flying professionals in India to the Level 4 standards set by ICAO. India's aviation safety depends on solving these safety challenges owing to its expanding position in air traffic networks worldwide.
