While rivers are important for ecosystems and human development, they are dynamic systems prone to various geohazards that pose significant risks to life, infrastructure and the environment. Common river-related geohazards include floods, riverbank erosion, siltation, landslides and avulsions. These hazards are often caused by natural processes such as heavy rainfall, tectonic activity and soil instability, or by human interventions such as dam construction, deforestation and sand mining. The impacts range from community displacement to degradation of aquatic ecosystems and economic losses. This paper discusses the causes, processes and consequences of these geohazards in order to develop effective risk mitigation and sustainable river basin management strategies.
