Title

A STUDY TO ASSESS THE KNOWLDGE AND PRACTICE ON ANTIBIOTICS USE IN UNDER FIVE CHILDREN AMONG MOTHERS AT SELECTED HOSPITAL CHENGALPATTU DISTRICT TAMILNADU

Abstract

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Inappropriate use of antibiotics among children under five contributes significantly to the development of antimicrobial resistance and other health complications. mothers, as primary caregivers, play a pivotal role in determining when and how antibiotics are administered to their children. understanding their knowledge and practices regarding antibiotic use is essential for designing effective interventions. AIM:This study aimed to assess the knowledge and practice of mothers concerning antibiotic use in under-five children at a selected hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among mothers (n = 100 participants) attending the pediatric outpatient department of [selected hospital, chengalpattu district, tamilnadu].participants were selected through a convenience sampling technique. data were collected using a structured questionnaire comprising sections on sociodemographic information, knowledge of antibiotics (indications, side effects, and resistance), and self-reported practices (completion of prescribed courses, storage, and disposal). descriptive statistics summarized participants’ responses, while chi-square tests examined associations between knowledge levels, practices, and demographic variables. results: the majority of mothers (x%) had moderate knowledge regarding the appropriate indications for antibiotic use, potential side effects, and the concept of antibiotic resistance. however, a substantial proportion (y%) reported not completing the full course of antibiotics once the child’s symptoms improved. significant associations were found between higher educational levels and better knowledge and practice (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Although most mothers demonstrated moderate awareness of antibiotic use for under-five children, gaps in practices—particularly adherence to prescribed regimens—were evident.
