Title

Ayurvedic Regimen with Lifestyle Modification in Yakrit Vikar w.s.r. to Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease; A Case Study

Abstract

Fatty liver disease includes a range of liver pathologies with varying clinical outcomes, from simple accumulation of triglycerides within hepatocytes, to more progressive steatosis that is linked to hepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis and in certain situations, Hepatocellular Carcinoma. It is a hepatic manifestation of a metabolic disorder associated with Obesity, insulin resistance and Dyslipidemia. It is caused due to excessive fat accumulation in liver cells resulting in inflammation in liver. Ayurveda also provides a vivid description of liver illnesses in relation to Kamala (jaundice) and Yakrit Roga (liver diseases) where it is described as a Santharpanotha Vyadhi (disease which caused by taking excessive nourishing diet) with vitiation of Kapha and Medas, getting Sthanasansraya in Yakrit (liver) which is Rakthavaha-srotomoola and Pittasthana (location of body humour Pitta). Here initially Agnivikriti (deranged digestive fire) occurs which leads to the formation of Ama (Free radicals) which results from the vitiation of Kaph-dosha and further results in unequal formation and deposition of Dushta Vasa (triglycerides) in Yakrit. Hence Agni-deepana (stimulating digestive fire), Amapachana (antioxidation), Lekhana (scraping), Srotosodhana (clearing of channels of circulation), Kapha Medohara (antihyperlipidemic) and Vataanulomana (normalising the movement of Vata) is aimed primarily.
