Title

One Nation, One Election: Evaluating the Democratic, Economic, and Administrative Implications

Abstract

The premise of One Nation, One Election (ONOE) has surfaced as a crucial reform initiative in India's electoral and governance framework. Led by a task force under former President Shri Ram Nath Kovind, the project seeks to synchronise elections for the Lok Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, Municipalities, and Panchayats. This research rigorously analyses the merits and demerits of the ONOE paradigm. Advocates contend that concurrent elections would diminish administrative interruptions, decrease public spending, and enhance policy consistency and voter participation. Critics express significant apprehensions regarding its ramifications for federalism, regional representation, and the democratic process. The paper examines the significant constitutional and logistical obstacles associated with enacting such a change, especially the necessity to modify essential constitutional provisions and establish effective institutional frameworks. This article aims to evaluate, through a balanced analysis, whether ONOE can improve voting efficiency while preserving India's democratic diversity and constitutional integrity.
