Title

Ayurvedic understanding of Linganāśa and its modern parallels with Optic Atrophy

Abstract

The optic nerve is not a true peripheral nerve but rather a direct extension of the central nervous system. Optic atrophy, once developed, is considered incurable in modern medicine. Consequently, many patients seek Ayurvedic management for this condition. The disease may arise due to various neurological, toxic, inflammatory, or systemic disorders. From an Ayurvedic perspective, while addressing this condition it is observed that primary optic atrophy primarily requires the management of Vāta Doṣa, wherein local as well as systemic Vātashamana measures are beneficial. In contrast, secondary optic atrophy necessitates not only the treatment of the underlying causative disorder but also the adoption of Pitta-shamana and Jvaraghna therapies prior to initiating Vātashamana. If Vātashamana measures are applied prematurely in secondary optic atrophy, the condition may deteriorate. Therefore, distinguishing between primary and secondary optic atrophy is essential, and the principles of their respective Ayurvedic management are elaborated and discussed.
