Title

THE ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES OF DISTRICT COLLECTORS AND MAGISTRATES UNDER THE BRITISH RULE

Abstract

District Collectors and Magistrates were the main administrative and judicial authority at the district level, responsible for revenue collection, law and order, and other administrative functions under the British rule. This paper explores the administrative roles and responsibilities of collectors and district magistrates under the British colonial domain in India. These officials served as vital links between the colonial government and local populations, exercising vast powers in the collection of income, the maintenance of the law and the order and local governance. When examining official records, administrative manuals and historical accounts, the study highlights about the British bureaucracy used these officers to consolidate power, enforce colonial policies and maintain control over rural and urban districts. The document also considers the legacy of these roles in post-colonial administrative structures. These officials served as fundamental agents of the colonial government, confident in a wide range of responsibilities, including the collection of land income, the maintenance of law and order, judicial functions and the supervision of local governance. Acting as executive and judicial authorities at the district level, they became the water colours of the British administrative control throughout the Indian subcontinent. This study analyses about these roles, their operational methods and their lasting impact on the Indian bureaucracy evolved. Through historical analysis, the document highlights the authoritarian nature of colonial governance and explores of these administrative structures influenced the administrative systems after independence.
