Title

Adaptive Kinetic Facades in High-Rise Architecture: Studio-Based Design Development for Climate-Responsive Building Envelopes

Abstract

The implication of adaptive kinetic facade is becoming very popular in the case of high-rise architecture, especially in tropical urban contexts where climate responsiveness, energy efficiency, and daylight modulation are essential. This paper presents a studio-based architectural finding conducted as a part of a design studio project at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST). One undergraduate student developed and designed a prototype kinetic facade system for a high-rise hotel overlooking a lake in the academic design studio. The system integrates light sensors, microcontroller logic, and modular panel movement to regulate solar gain through the facade to ensure indoor thermal comfort. Drawing from parametric design tools and interdisciplinary collaboration, the project merges environmental performance with architectural expression. Through empirical testing and iterative design, the kinetic facade functions not only as a responsive envelope but also as a pedagogical medium. This study contributes to architectural discourse by demonstrating how studio-based research can serve as a platform for sustainable innovation and hands-on learning. Project-based inquiry of design will let the students and teachers gain understanding through authentic performance.
