Title

Seismic Performance Evaluation of RC Frames with Masonry Infill and Shear Walls Using Pushover Analysis

Abstract

This study focuses on evaluating the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) frames with open ground storey (OGS) buildings, specifically targeting retrofitting techniques to enhance their seismic resilience. Two retrofitting methods were analyzed: masonry infill and shear walls with masonry infill. Using nonlinear static pushover analysis (NLSA), an 8-story RC building was analyzed to assess the effects of these retrofitting techniques on the building's strength, displacement, and overall performance under seismic loading. The results showed that the addition of shear walls significantly increased the building’s seismic performance, with shear wall configurations—both center and corner shear walls—showing improved lateral resistance and stiffness compared to bare and partially infilled frames. While masonry infill walls offered enhanced displacement capacity, they demonstrated lower strength compared to shear walls. The study also evaluated the ductility and overstrength factors, highlighting that shear walls exhibited greater overstrength and improved capacity to withstand seismic forces, reducing the risk of collapse. These findings emphasize the importance of selecting effective retrofitting methods, particularly in regions with high seismic risks, and the potential of combining masonry infill with shear walls for optimal structural performance. This research also underscores the need for a more in-depth investigation of hybrid retrofitting systems that integrate both infill walls and shear walls to maximize seismic resilience in low- and medium-rise buildings.
