Abstract

The study determined the students’ profile and level of communicative competence of Grade 10 students as basis for developing a contextualized digital learning content (DLC) in Medroso-Mendoza National High School, Calabanga District, Division of Camarines Sur, School Year 2023-2024. It answered the following: 1) the profile of the respondents; 2) the level of communicative competence of the respondents; 3) the significant difference in the communicative competence of the students when grouped according to their profile; 4) the students’ profile that was significantly associated to the level of communicative competence; and 5) the digital learning material in the form of video developed based on the findings of this study. The study employed descriptive-comparative-associational research design and Research and Development (R&D) method. A total of 84 respondents were involved in the study. Statistical tools such as mean, standard deviation, proficiency level, chi-square, t-test for independent sample means and Analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to treat the data. The major findings were: (1) the number of male and female was both 38 or 50%; 28 or 36.84% of the parents were elementary graduate and the English language exposure had a frequency count of 41 or 53.95%; (2) the students’ level of communicative competence was indicated by a mean score of 17.02 and a performance level of 34.04%; (3) the computed t-value in terms of sex profile was -7.39 and a probability value (p-value) of 0.00 ; (4) the profile of the students along sex has a computed chi-square value of 13.67 and p-value of 0.00 and English language exposure has a computed chi-square value of 13.34 and a p-value of 0.03; and (5) the digital learning content in the form of video was a 10 to 15 minute video that addressed the communicative competence of the students. The major conclusions were: (1) the respondents were equally distributed, more than one-third were elementary graduate, and more than half sometimes exposed to the English language; (2) the students’ communicative competence was in the beginning level; (3) there was a significant difference in the level of communicative competence of the students when grouped according to gender profile; (4) sex profile and English language exposure was significantly associated with the students’ level of communicative competence; and, (5) the digital learning material was a contextualized digital learning context that utilized engaging sounds and transitions to stimulate the learners.
