Title

The Gut-Brain Axis and the Role of Yoga and Pranayama: A Holistic Perspective

Authors

Abstract

The gut-brain axis is an intricate bidirectional communication system linking the central nervous system (CNS) with the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It integrates neural, hormonal, and immune pathways, profoundly influencing mental health, stress responses, and cognitive functions. Emerging research highlights the role of gut microbiota in regulating this axis, underscoring its potential as a therapeutic target for disorders like anxiety, depression, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Yoga and pranayama, ancient mind-body practices, offer non-pharmacological approaches to enhancing gut-brain axis functioning. Yoga's physical postures (asanas) stimulate vagus nerve activity, improving gut motility and promoting parasympathetic dominance. Pranayama, or breath regulation, reduces stress-induced gut dysfunction by modulating autonomic balance and lowering cortisol levels. These practices also influence microbiota diversity, fostering a healthier gut environment. Integrating yoga and pranayama into daily routines can potentially mitigate stress-related gut-brain axis disturbances, enhance resilience, and improve overall well-being. This article reviews the current understanding of the gut-brain axis, explores the physiological impacts of yoga and pranayama, and advocates for further interdisciplinary research to validate these holistic interventions.
