Title

A CRITICAL REVIEW ON THE ROLE OF PUSHKARMOOL CHURAN IN THE MANAGEMENT OF TAMAKA SHWASA W.S.R TO BRONCHIAL ASTHMA

Abstract

Tamaka Shwasa, one of the five types of Shwasa Roga described in Ayurvedic texts, is considered a primary disorder of the pranvahastrotas (respiratory system). This condition closely resembles bronchial asthma, a respiratory ailment characterized by airway constriction and narrowing in response to various triggers such as allergens, cold air, physical exertion, or emotional stress. With the rapid pace of industrialization and urbanization, the prevalence of asthma is expected to rise significantly in the coming years. While modern medicine relies on bronchodilators and corticosteroids for asthma management, these treatments often come with numerous side effects. In light of this, Ayurvedic approaches are gaining attention as potentially safer alternatives. Ayurvedic texts describe numerous single and compound formulations for managing Tamaka Shwasa. Among these, Pushkarmool (Inula racemosa) stands out as a promising single herbal remedy. Pushkarmool is known for its antihistaminic, expectorant, and bronchodilator properties, making it particularly effective against Tamaka Shwasa. This review delves into the traditional Ayurvedic understanding of Pushkarmool's therapeutic actions, explores its phytochemical profile, and examines the potential mechanisms through which it alleviates asthma symptoms. The study aims to shed light on Pushkarmool's efficacy as a natural and cost-effective alternative in asthma management. By doing so, it seeks to address the growing need for treatments that can reduce both the economic burden and the side effects associated with conventional asthma therapies.
