Title

HYPERTENSION, AN AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

According to the current definition of hypertension, it is a state of blood pressure where the value of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) becomes more than 130 mm Hg and 80 mm Hg respectively. It is considered among the most common chronic medical condition characterized by persistent elevation in arterial pressure. It has been among the most studied topics of the previous century and the most significant comorbidities contributing to the development of stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and renal failure. Various theories have been proposed to explain hypertension from an Ayurvedic perspective, but experts have not reached a consensus. A comprehensive review of Ayurvedic literature was conducted to understand blood pressure physiology and the etio-pathogenesis of hypertension within Ayurveda. Hypertension cannot be classified as a disease in its mild or moderate stages unless specific symptoms are present. Instead, it seems to represent an early stage of pathogenesis and a risk factor for diseases affecting the heart, brain, kidneys, eyes, and other organs. Unhealthy dietary habits and a sedentary modern lifestyle, with or without genetic predisposition, disturb and aggravate all three Tridoshas, contributing to the development of hhypertension.
