Title

READING COMPREHENSION SKILLS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: BASIS IN CRAFTING A SUPPLEMENTARY READING PROGRAM

Abstract

This study determined the reading comprehension level of Grade 7 Junior High School (JHS) students and served as basis in crafting a supplementary reading program in Calabanga District, Calabanga, Division of Camarines Sur, School Year 2023-2024. It answered (1) the students’ reading comprehension level in terms phonemic awareness, vocabulary skills and comprehension skills; (2) the significant difference in the students’ level of reading comprehension among aspects and among respondents; and (3) the intervention program crafted to enhance reading comprehension of the students. The study applied a descriptive - comparative design. There were 187 Grade 7 students used in this study. A 50-item teacher-made test was used to gather data. Various statistical tools such as mean, standard deviation, proficiency level, t-test, and analysis of variance were used to treat the data statistically. The major findings were: (1) the students’ reading comprehension level was indicated by 39.21% proficiency level; (2) the obtained f-value for the test of significant difference on students’ reading comprehension level was 197.70 with a corresponding p-value of 0.00.; and (3) the reading program crafted was a year-round program on reading comprehension to address the needs of the Grade 7 students but it could be implemented annually. The major conclusions were: (1) the students’ reading comprehension was on the developing level; (2) there was a significant difference in the performance along reading comprehension; and, (3) the developed reading program was entitled Project SHARP which is composed of different activities which are designed for the development of vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension skills by utilizing various reading materials that would be applicable in their level.
