The transportation problem, a well-known type of optimization problem from operations research, aims at minimizing the cost of transporting a commodity from a set of origins (e.g., factories) to a set of destinations (e.g., distribution centers) given supply and demand constraints. In contrast, traditional methods (including North-West Corner Method, Least Cost Method, Vogel’s Approximation Method, Modified Distribution Method (MODI), Stepping Stone Method, etc) involve many iterations and turns, particularly for large scale or complex problems. The Advanced Method for Solving the Transportation Problem (AMSTP) is therefore proposed in this paper, comprising a simple algorithm and an implementation in Python, seeking an effective and trustworthy alternative. Comparative numerical analysis proves that AMSTP yields optimal solutions with appreciably lesser computation compared to existing methods.
