Title

VIRGINIA WOOLF’S A ROOM OF ONE’S OWN: A FEMINIST MANIFESTO

Authors

Abstract

Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was an English writer, one of the most influential modernist authors of the 20th century. Renowned for her innovative, narrative techniques and deep psychological insight, Woolf challenged the conventions of traditional story telling. She is perhaps best known for her works exposing the inner-lives of her characters, often using stream-of-consciousness writing and fluid narrative structures. Some of her most famous works include Mrs. Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), Orando (1928), and A Room of One’s Own (1929). Woolf’s narratives were ground breaking. Her novels such as Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse employed stream of consciousness techniques that delved deeply into the inner lives of the characters. This focus on personal experience and perception challenged traditional narrative structures, offering a new way to explore gender, identity and societal roles. Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own, first published in 1929, is not just a critical essay on women’s writing but a powerful feminist manifesto that explores the intersections of gender, creativity and economic independence. Based on a series of lectures Woolf delivered at Women’s College of Cambridge University, the text argues that for women to produce art and literature of their own they must first have the autonomy and financial freedom that men have historically enjoyed. At its core,A Room of One’s Own is a call to action – an urgent demand for women to reclaim their creative potential and achieve the same intellectual freedoms that were really available to their male counterparts.
