Phyllanthus acidus (L.) Skeels, commonly known as the Otaheite gooseberry or Malay gooseberry, is a tropical plant widely used in traditional medicine across Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. Known for its sour-tasting fruits, the plant has gained scientific interest due to its rich phytochemical profile and broad spectrum of biological activities, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antidiabetic, and anticancer properties. This review consolidates current knowledge on the taxonomy, phytochemical constituents, traditional uses, and pharmacological potential of P. acidus, highlighting its therapeutic significance and the need for further research and clinical evaluation to develop it as a viable herbal medicine.
