Title

The Role of Emotional Intelligence in Business Leadership: A Critical Review for Future Research

Abstract

Summary Emotional intelligence (EI) is a critical competency in business leadership that encompasses the ability to recognize, understand, and manage one's own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. The concept gained prominence in the 1990s, primarily through the work of psychologist Daniel Goleman, whose 1995 book "Emotional Intelligence" argued that EI can be more influential than traditional cognitive intelligence (IQ) in determining personal and professional success. Leaders equipped with high emotional intelligence are better positioned to foster positive workplace environments, navigate interpersonal conflicts, and inspire team members, ultimately contributing to higher organizational performance and employee satisfaction. The relevance of emotional intelligence in leadership extends beyond individual performance; it has become a focal point in leadership training programs, which emphasize its role in effective decision-making, team dynamics, and conflict resolution. Goleman identified five key elements of EI—self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills—that collectively enhance a leader's ability to connect with their team and drive organizational success. Studies have shown that leaders who exhibit high emotional intelligence not only motivate their teams more effectively but also cultivate an inclusive culture that promotes collaboration and innovation. Despite its benefits, the application of emotional intelligence in leadership is not without challenges and criticisms. Concerns regarding the measurement and assessment of EI highlight difficulties in defining and quantifying this multifaceted construct, leading to inconsistent evaluations and skepticism about its practical applicability in leadership contexts. Additionally, some argue that an overemphasis on EI could detract from other essential leadership skills, such as strategic thinking and decision-making, which are also critical for business success. In summary, emotional intelligence is a vital attribute for effective leadership in today’s business environment, influencing various facets of organizational dynamics. As businesses increasingly recognize its importance, the integration of emotional intelligence into leadership development remains a subject of both interest and scrutiny within the field of management studies.
