Title

Teenage Trials and Tribulations in Angie Thomas’ On The Come Up

Abstract

Abstract Not all teenagers have a life that is a definition of comfort and carefree existence. At times, it’s a phase of their lives that are the very epitome of trials and tribulations. Be it poverty, family dysfunction or a present that is miserable and a future that is bleak, teenagers with a fighting spirit and the ability to turn their disadvantages into benefits have to go through immense difficulties to have a semblance of security in their lives. Angie Thomas depicts all kinds of troubles that teenagers go through when an entire system is stacked against them. The protagonist, a sixteen year old girl of color, Brianna Jackson is put to the test by life when she has to overcome numerous obstacles if she wishes to see a future for herself. Those impediments are also faced, to a certain extent, by her friends who too are putting up a brave face in the face of adversity. Angie Thomas has drawn attention to some very serious issues that plague teenagers who are on their own to make a success of their lives. In addition, the teenagers have to fight the stereotypes that have been formed against them. The unfair and unjust system in which they have to survive and beat to become successful is no easy task. But through their talent, discipline and dedication that they possess, they are determined to overcome all hurdles which also involves risks of great magnitude.
