Title

A Survey On Face Anti-spoofing: Tackling Unseen Presentation Attacks

Abstract

The rapid rise of face recognition technologies in security and authentication systems has necessitated robust solutions against presentation attacks and spoofing techniques. Face anti-spoofing, also known as face liveness detection, aims to distinguish genuine user interactions from deceptive attempts using photos, videos, or masks. With the advent of deep learning and its variants, researchers have proposed various models—ranging from convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to attention based and meta-learning architectures—to address spoof detection, especially under unseen conditions. This survey provides a comprehensive overview of 21 recent and impactful works from 2017 to 2024, analyzing their contributions to face anti-spoofing. Key methodologies include spatial and temporal feature modeling, domain adaptation, multimodal inputs, and graph-based learning. In addition, the survey also includes recent advances in deepfake and audio-based spoofing detection using self supervised and GAN-based approaches. A comparative analysis is conducted in terms of algorithms used and performance metrics. This paper aims to highlight trends, challenges, and future directions in generalizing face anti-spoofing systems to real world, unseen environments.
