Title

Descriptive study to assess the level of knowledge regarding puerperal sepsis and its management among Postnatal Mothers

Abstract

Puerperal sepsis is the infection of genital tract occurring at any time between the onset of rupture of membranes of labour, and 42nd day postpartum in which two or more of the following are present fever, pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal discharge, foul smell of discharge, subinvolution of the-uterus.1 Puerperal sepsis preventable with provision of adequate antenatal care, referral and timely treatment of complications of pregnancy, promoting Institutional delivery and postnatal care.2 Puerperal sepsis is the third or fourth leading cause of maternal health worldwide with mortality due to infections3. It is the cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in the developing countries. The incidence or puerperal pyrexia was 8.68%.and was responsible for 60.29% of cases of puerperal sepsis4. The common predisposing factors were unlooked status, primiparity Caesarean section, anaemia, frequent PV examination and prolonged rupture of membranes. The most common microorganisms in vaginal swab culture and sensitivity were S. aureus (36%) and E. coli5(29.8%). Researcher during her clinical posting and in field witnesses many patients admitted with problem of puerperal sepsis. The researcher had found that Puerperal sepsis occurs due to lack of poor hygiene. It is the one of the leading causes of high maternal mortality which can be managed by providing proper education to postnatal mothers. In regard to that a descriptive study to assess the knowledge of postnatal mother regarding puerperal sepsis and its management and was assesses in selected hospital of Panipat, Haryana. Total 200 of postnatal mothers were selected using convenient sampling technique. A semi structured tool has been used in the study for collecting the data. Collected data has been analysed on the basis of objective of the study and majority of females(30%) were in age group of 20-25 years of age. The major findings shows that maximum number (64%) of postnatal mothers had average knowledge followed by (29%) postnatal mothers. The researcher in this term concluded and recommended about the information booklet and any other source method of information for improving the knowledge and spreading awareness in regard to the puerperal sepsis.
