Title

LATE NIGHT EATING HABITS: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS BETWEEN DAY SCHOLARS AND HOSTELLERS

Abstract

This study explores and compares the late-night eating habits of hostellers and day scholars, focusing on the frequency of late-night eating, types of food consumed, reasons behind this behavior, perceived health effects, and suggested strategies for improvement. A total of 186 college students participated in the survey, with responses analyzed separately for hostellers and day scholars. The findings indicate that hostellers are more likely to engage in late-night eating, often due to hunger and academic workload, and primarily consume packaged and fast foods. In contrast, day scholars exhibit more balanced eating patterns, including a higher intake of home-cooked meals.Although a majority in both groups believed that late-night eating had little effect on their weight, several reported issues such as poor sleep and indigestion.Better meal planning emerged as the most commonly recommended strategy to manage late-night eating. These results underscore the influence of living environment on dietary habits and highlight the need for nutrition education and structured interventions to promote healthier behaviour among students.
