Title

Future challenges and emerging trends in DevOps

Abstract

The nature of DevOps, being the synergy that collaborates development and operations practices, can be envisioned as a paradigm shift in the software segments. The primary intention is to provide automation in the software product's delivery and to relieve the attendant constraints of quality, minimizing time to market. In initiating the adoption of DevOps in enterprises, organizations are confronted with many challenges. Almost all of these challenges have arisen from the integration of various types of tools, processes, and skill sets that development and operations teams have to work with. These stumbling blocks might hamper the very spirit of collaboration and must be overlooked to gain maximum benefits from DevOps. This paper intends to study the future trends and challenges of DevOps in a deeper manner. This research is conducted involving various best practices, tools, and frameworks pertinent to effective DevOps implementation gained from a systematic literature review (SLR), together with insights provided by industrial experts. Then, these practices are prioritized using advanced decision-making techniques, fuzzy-AHP and PROMETHEE-II, providing a structured taxonomy that signifies the importance of each factor in the DevOps timeline. One of the primal threads in this study is security, which is widely interpreted as one of the greatest impediments to DevOps adoption. Security must flow into the DevOps pipeline, or DevSecOps, as a means to ensure resilient, compliant software delivery. After identifying eighteen security challenges, this paper provides practical suggestions on securing DevOps environments using techniques for expert prioritization.
