The Kurmi community who are indigenous to the Chotanagpur plateau in West Bengal Odisha Bihar and Jharkhand have a long history of traditional practices and devotion to nature. During British rule the Kurmis were initially classified as tribal people however post-independence reclassification aimed at standardizing demographic categories caused them to lose this status in 1950. Their ability to receive tribal-specific benefits was severely impacted by this shift which resulted in socioeconomic disadvantages and a decline in political representation. The Kurmi movement aims to regain their tribal recognition in response. The origins of the community the historical change in their status and the movements continuing influence on Jharkhand are all covered in detail in this study. The research clarifies the wider ramifications of identity and governance for indigenous communities in contemporary India by examining these components.
