Title

Multilevel Inverter Topology For Medium Voltage Drive Application

Abstract

Multilevel inverters have emerged as a key solution for enhancing the performance and reliability of high-power medium-voltage drive applications. Medium-voltage drives are used to control medium-voltage AC motors in large industrial applications. The common challenges that are faced in medium-voltage drives are higher rating of switches, quality of output power, losses due to high-frequency modulation techniques, and requirement of filters. A multilevel inverter can address simultaneously power quality, rating of the switches, requirement of filters, etc. There are various topologies of multilevel inverters and control strategies being developed. An extensive literature review will be carried out for the comparative analysis of various topologies. This proposed work involves the selection of a multilevel inverter topology suitable for medium-voltage drive applications. Due to the step waveform, the output voltage of MLI has a lesser THD compared with the two levels of the inverter. The good quality of the output voltage can be obtained using various modulation techniques in a multilevel inverter. If a proper modulation strategy is applied, the motor inductance can filter the current harmonic and can help reduce the current THD to acceptable levels, eliminating the requirement for heavy filters. This work focuses on modulation techniques suitable for medium voltage drives.
