Title

Content Knowledge and Pedagogical Competence of English Teachers: Its Influence on the Academic Performance of Students

Abstract

The level of content knowledge and pedagogical competence of English teachers and its influence on students’ academic performance were determined using the Descriptive-correlational methods of research. The data was collected from the 36 English Teachers, and 367 students from Department of Education, Division of Camarines Sur, Caramoan District through a modified research survey questionnaire and documentary analysis. It was statistically treated through weighted mean, performance level, mean, Standard deviation, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, and, coefficient of determination. The findings of the study indicated that the: (1) teachers were fairly competent in the content application within and across curriculum areas, developing higher-order thinking skills and classroom communication strategies; (2) the students possessed a satisfactory level of academic performance in English; (3) teachers’ content knowledge and pedagogical competence had no significant relationships on students’ academic performance; (4) teachers’ teaching content knowledge and pedagogical competence had a weak influence on student’s academic performance; and, (5) the proposed development plan would incessantly develop the content knowledge and pedagogical competence of teachers and improve the student’s academic performance.
