Chandigarh was recognized as India’s second cleanest city amongst 73 cities surveyed in 2016. However, post 2016; its position had dramatically declined, highlighting the city's waste management system reaching a critical juncture. The buildup of garbage at the Dadu Majra garbage dump site was a consequence of the lack of an effective waste management system. Basic amenities such as clean water, sanitation and electricity are often inadequate or absent. The survey highlights common health issues such as respiratory ailments, skin infections, and frequent injuries. The lack of protective gear and proper healthcare access compounds these risks, making waste picking a highly dangerous occupation.
