Title

Comparative Study of Seismic Behavior of Various Steel Braced Frames

Abstract

Steel framed structures normally be designed to dissipate large amounts of energy when subjected to severe lateral loads. They must dissipate this energy in such a way that sufficient levels of lateral stiffness and strength are maintained without imposing damage or severe collapse. There are several techniques to improve the lateral loading response of framed buildings includs: (1) Braced frames, (2) Moment-resisting frames, (3) Shear walls. Besides other structural systems, braced frames have been an effective technique to enhance structural resistance against lateral loads than moment resisting frames or shear walls. The concept of using steel braced frames in seismic resistant design is very effective in controlling the interstory drift and reducing damage to structure. There are different ways of providing braces for increasing the seismic resistance. In this study, different steel braced frame are modeled for 3 storey, 7 storey, 11 storey building in SAP2000. Each building is designed using IS 1893 (part-1): 2002 and IS 800-1984. Pushover analysis is carried on these systems for 3 storey, 7 storey, 11 storey building and then based on a non-linear pushover static analysis; the seismic parameters and performance levels are compared. The performance of the example buildings have been examined with different types of bracing systems. The effectiveness of the bracing systems are examined with respect to the strength, ductility, and functionality. It has been concluded that certain bracing systems can satisfy the contradicting properties of strength, ductility, and functionality.
