Title

Role of Dexmedetomidine in Modern Anesthetic Practice

Abstract

In contemporary anesthetic practice, dexmedetomidine, a highly selective alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist, has become a versatile drug. It is a useful adjunct in perioperative care because of its sedative, anxiolytic, sympatholytic, and analgesic qualities as well as its low respiratory depression. This mini-review highlights the pharmacological, clinical uses, and concerns of dexmedetomidine in anesthesia, summarizing the most recent research on its advantages and disadvantages. In addition to being an analgesic, it also exhibits sympatholytic properties, an anesthetic sparing effect, and cardiovascular stabilizing properties. Its benefits include preserving respiratory function and reducing delirium. In the intensive care unit and operating room, dexmedetomidine is a helpful non-opioid medication used to control pain and sedation. One Important feature dexmedetomidine is its capacity to provide analgesia and drowsiness without causing respiratory depression. This substance has a broad safety margin, a strong sedative effect, and mild analgesic qualities. Dexmedetomidine appears to have future uses in neuroprotection, cardioprotection, and renoprotection, despite its widespread usage in patients in surgery and non-surgical intensive care units. Although the medication works well, vital sign monitoring is necessary when using it. To avoid negative effects, the pharmacist and the clinician should both make sure the proper dosage is administered. This review's objective is to raise awareness of its function in modern anesthesia while also going over its drawbacks.
