Title

AQUATIC PLANT-BASED MODIFIED ROOT ZONE SYSTEM (MRZ) FOR EFFICIENT TREATMENT OF SEWAGE, DYES, AND TANNERY EFFLUENTS

Abstract

. The role of macrophytes (Phragmites australis and Canna sp.) was assessed in bioremediation of sewage and industrial wastewater using Modified Root Zone (MRZ) method and evaluated the efficiency of organic waste reduction in treated water. The MRZ method was carried out in the laboratory, for the above effluents in different concentrations (viz. 25, 50, 75 and 100%). Bioremediation with 25% and 50% concentration of effluents at the end of 48 hrs for pH, salinity, BOD, COD, TSS and TDS were found to be reduced to maximum extent, but in 75% and 100% concentration, the reduction in the above parameters was negligible, may be probably due to heavy pollutional load. The results are discussed in the light of recent literature.
