Sacred water systems in India such as stepwells, temple tanks, and sacred lakes—have historically served as vital sources of water while fulfilling spiritual, social, and ecological roles. Rooted in religious rituals and community traditions, these structures represent time-tested water management practices. However, urbanization, industrialization, pollution, and declining cultural engagement have led to their deterioration. This study explores the historical and contemporary role of religious practices, temple traditions, and community participation in conserving these water bodies. It highlights the significance of religious festivals, pilgrimages, and temple trusts in sustaining sacred water systems. Through case studies, the paper illustrates successful community-driven conservation efforts and evaluates the potential of integrating traditional practices with modern water management strategies. The research emphasizes the need for policy support, public awareness, and collaborative action to preserve these culturally and ecologically valuable water systems for future generations.
