Title

Impact of Courtyards on Students' Psychology

Abstract

Educational architecture's emphasis has recently changed from purely functional spaces to holistic settings that promote learning and mental health. The courtyard is an architectural feature that has long been a part of many traditional building typologies, particularly in educational contexts across cultural boundaries. This study examines how courtyards affect students psychologically, highlighting how they enhance social interaction, mental wellness, and cognitive function. To comprehend how courtyard-centric school layouts affect students' behavior and pleasure, the study consults various interdisciplinary sources, including environmental psychology, architectural design, and case studies. According to research, well-designed courtyards, particularly those that are student-centered and climate-responsive, serve as micro-environments that improve mood, lower stress, and foster a sense of openness and belonging. Through real-world school examples, this research compares traditional and current implementations, further classifies courtyards by kind and function, and examines their historical significance. By doing this, it seeks to mainstream courtyard design as a vital component of modern school architecture, supporting both mental and physical well-being.
