In the context of affordable housing across India, access to natural daylight is often compromised due to high-density layouts and limited lateral window openings, resulting in increased reliance on artificial lighting that elevates energy consumption and adversely affects the health and comfort of residents. This research investigates the feasibility of using skylights to enhance daylight penetration in compact urban dwellings by focusing on various skylight designs through a multi-faceted methodology that includes field surveys, daylight performance simulations, analysis of locally available materials, and cost-benefit assessments. The aim is to identify skylight solutions that improve daylight quality while remaining affordable and scalable in the Indian urban context. Preliminary findings suggest that optimized skylight models can significantly enhance light distribution in low-cost housing and can be tailored to meet the specific needs of urban residents, offering actionable recommendations for architects, developers, and policymakers. The research emphasizes the importance of integrating sustainable practices into housing design, leading to more energy-efficient and livable environments in India's rapidly growing urban centers, and by advocating for skylight implementation, it seeks to contribute to a healthier, more comfortable living experience for occupants while also addressing broader environmental concerns.
