Title

EVOLUTION OF INDIAN ART TECHNIQUES FROM THE COLONIAL ERA TO THE CONTEMPORARY ERA

Authors

Abstract

This research paper focuses on the techniques of Indian art and how it has started to pave the way into new directions from the post-colonial period to contemporary art. In 1947, when India was freed, artists began to find their own identity and experimented with various mediums, methods, and techniques. The evolution of Indian art techniques from the post-colonial period to contemporary art has been marked by experimentation, blending traditional methods with modern creations, and a shift towards new media, digital art, found objects, textile art, etcetera. Following independence, the artists attempted to get back in touch with Indian traditional and folk-art practices such as Madhubani and Warli. At the beginning of the post-colonial period, artists rejuvenated the traditional techniques using watercolor wash, gouache, and oil colors with abstraction. The 1970s witnessed different art genres, including installation art with combined sculptures, photo performances, and photography. Recently, in contemporary art, Indian artists have blended traditional techniques with cutting-edge technologies to get the best outcome for their ideas. They have also explored artificial intelligence more, as AI has just been introduced worldwide.
