Title

CONTRIBUTION OF WOMEN IN INDIAN NATIONALISM AND INDIAN FREEDOM

Abstract

Nationalism is a feeling of loyalty, devotion and allegiance to one nation or nation state that surpasses other individual or group interest. This feeling or ideology is not confined to one particular gender, sex, caste, religion, class and can be practice by any individual. However when we talk about freedom struggle we consider one particular gender (male) as the harbingers of the Indian freedom, its not a doubt that prominent leaders like Mahatma Gandhi , Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru , Subhash Chandra Bose etc. have made indispensable role in Indian freedom , but women who were earlier restricted only to domestic or household responsibilities , defied social norms and participated in nationalist endeavours as leaders, reformers, and revolutionaries. Women made contributions through political action, military conflict, and nonviolent resistance, motivated by nationalist aspirations and socioreligious changes. Their participation in revolutionary organizations like the INA and activities like the Quit India, Civil Disobedience, and Non-Cooperation activities was crucial to India's liberation. Understanding the nationalist struggle and women's empowerment in postcolonial India requires acknowledging their efforts.
