Abstract : Binomial method of naming of plants proved very useful worldwide. These names, whether generic or specific, are coined on certain bases. They reveal man-plant relationships whether concrete or abstract, if analysed etymologically. The present author studied 20 generic names and 16 specific names of pteridophytic plants. The generic names appeared founded on ten different bases like characteristic property or observations, beauty, medicinal utility, ecology, comparison with animals or their organs, colour, shape, habit, and distribution of plants, and after gods. The specific names have been coined on the basis of eleven different criteria such as mythology, plant features and height of plants, utility as food, comparison with animal organs, etc. The man-plant relationship with particular reference to pteridophytes is rather meager as compared to angiospermic plant group.
