Title

Purnata: A Soulful Journey to Inner Tranquility Through Sacred Architecture

Abstract

In the modern era, urbanization and fast-paced lifestyles have led to increasing stress, anxiety, and mental fatigue. Meditation has emerged as a powerful tool for enhancing well-being, fostering mindfulness, and restoring inner peace. This research paper explores the role of architectural design in creating tranquil meditation spaces that cater to urban dwellers seeking spiritual and emotional balance. The study delves into the essence of tranquility, defining the spatial and environmental characteristics that contribute to a meditative atmosphere. Through a comparative analysis of renowned meditation retreats—The Art of Living (Bangalore), Isha Yoga (Coimbatore), Pyramid Valley (Bangalore), and others—this research identifies key design principles such as natural integration, spatial flow, acoustic comfort, and sensory balance that enhance meditation experiences. Additionally, the research explores the importance of physical and spiritual activities in meditation spaces, highlighting their role in holistic well-being. The paper also examines the application of the seven chakras in space planning, influencing zoning, circulation, and activity segregation. Special emphasis is placed on sustainability and passive design strategies to create self-sufficient spaces that harmonize with nature. The findings highlight how meditation spaces can contribute to stress relief, improved focus, emotional well-being, and community bonding. This research ultimately advocates for the integration of meditative architecture into urban settings, demonstrating its potential to enhance public well-being and redefine urban spaces as sanctuaries for mental and spiritual rejuvenation.
