Title

Evaluation of Short Circuit Current under Transient Skin Effect in DC Rail System

Abstract

In DC rail systems the transient skin is the temporary concentration of current near the surface of a conductor during rapid changes in current, such as during start-up, shutdown or fault conditions. Although the skin effect is typically associated with AC systems, transient events in DC systems can introduce high-frequency components due to rapid current changes resulting in similar phenomena. During transients, the eddy currents causes currents to concentrate near the surface. The transients being high frequency components results in reduced skin depth and increased effective resistance. Rails are constructed from steel material which is known for its high resistivity and permeability. During transient conditions, the skin effect increases the resistance within the rails. The geometry of the rails affects current distribution and leads to concentrated flow near edges and specific areas under such transient states. This increased resistance results in voltage drops, negatively impacting traction and signaling systems. The end equipment hence experiences voltage fluctuations during railway acceleration or fault events. In this paper, a MATLAB simulation model is developed for analysing the transient skin effect in DC rail system and evaluating the fault current.
