Title

Impact of replacement of cement with rice husk ash and waste paper sludge ash on strength properties of concrete

Abstract

The increasing demand for construction materials has led to a surge in cement consumption, contributing significantly to environmental degradation. To address this issue, the present study investigates the potential of Rice Husk Ash (RHA) and Waste Paper Sludge Ash (WPSA) as partial replacements for cement in concrete. Both materials are industrial by-products—RHA from rice milling and WPSA from paper manufacturing—making them environmentally sustainable alternatives. Concrete mixes were prepared with varying replacement levels of 8%, 16%, and 24% by weight of cement. Standard concrete specimens, including cubes (150 mm × 150 mm × 150 mm) and cylinders (150 mm × 300 mm), were cast and subjected to appropriate curing. A total of 72 specimens were tested for compressive strength, split tensile strength, flexural strength, and normal consistency. The results indicate that the inclusion of RHA and WPSA not only contributes to effective waste utilization but also enhances the mechanical properties of concrete, demonstrating their suitability for sustainable construction applications.
