Title

Design and Implementation of a Three-Phase Fault Detection and Protection System

Abstract

This study presents the design and implementation of a three-phase fault detection and protection system utilizing a microcontroller and GSM communication. The proposed system is capable of identifying and classifying electrical faults such as Line-to-Ground, Line-to-Line, and Double Line-to-Ground, which commonly occur in power distribution systems. It distinguishes between temporary and permanent faults by introducing a brief delay before initiating protection measures, thereby preventing unnecessary tripping in transient conditions. The system is designed to enhance the reliability of power delivery in residential, commercial, and industrial substations. It employs three single-phase transformers configured in both star-star and delta connections, stepping down from 220V to 12V for safe fault simulation and analysis. Faults are introduced through a set of manually operated switches, allowing for controlled testing and real-time fault monitoring. GSM technology ensures prompt fault reporting to operators, enabling rapid response and minimizing damage to power system components. The implementation aims to improve operational safety, reduce downtime, and increase the efficiency of fault management in electrical networks.
