Title

Identification and Evaluation of Distribution Risk in Food Supply Chain

Authors

Abstract

As food supply chains become more complex and international, problems with their distribution now attract much attention, as they can greatly reduce food availability, add to expenses and threaten quality and safety. In this research, we work to recognize what causes distributions risk and evaluate how those can harm the performance and continuity of food supply chains, especially in handling greens and other perishables on a cross-state basis. Through expert interviews and surveys of stakeholders, including suppliers, transporters and retailers, the study discovers that the major risk factors are transportation issues, poorly developed cold chain technology, a lack of labor, regulatory complications and impacts from climate changes. This analysis uses a risk matrix approach to organize risks according to their likelihood and result which helps complete an overall assessment to guide mitigation plans. Most research states that operations-related risks are directly manageable, but other risks caused by volatile fuel prices and emergencies call for inventive methods and teamwork in risk management. It shows that risk visibility, combination of planning and using digital solutions can help address urgent problems in food distribution. As a result of this study, food companies, policy makers and logistics providers have new insights to help them better organize for shocks and reduce risks in their distribution process.
