This study has been undertaken a span of century past over the investigation of electrocardiogram (ECG) but even today also electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring is serving its significant role of aid to take care of patients suffering from cardiac diseases. Electrocardiogram (ECG) technology is central to non-invasive cardiac diagnosis. Recent advances in signal processing have greatly facilitated ECG interpretation using more accurate feature extraction, effective denoising, and stable real-time monitoring. Compression and transmission of ECG signals have also been required with the increase in portable medical devices and telemedicine. This review synthesizes results of recent studies on heart rate variability (HRV), wavelet transform-based feature extraction, signal denoising, alarm fatigue minimization in clinical monitoring, and optimized ECG data compression to allow portable systems. Focus is given to methodologies with embedded device compatibility and to facilitating digital analysis from analog ECG strips, feature extraction, compression of signal and analysis.
