Title

Atmospheric Boundary Layer Characteristics During Meiyu Season over Dongshan, China

Abstract

This study investigates the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) characteristics over Dongshan, China, particularly during the Meiyu season, utilizing comprehensive ground-based remote sensing observations. By deploying a Wind Profiler Radar (WPR) and a Radio Acoustic Sounding System (RASS), we analyze the diurnal evolution and structural variations of the ABL and Convective Boundary Layer (CBL). Our findings reveal distinct ABL behaviors under varying meteorological conditions: a shallow CBL with limited growth on non-precipitating days, a continuously deepening CBL on pre-Meiyu convective days (reaching higher altitudes before precipitation onset), and a shallow, moisture-rich CBL during Meiyu convective days, influenced by increased latent heat fluxes. We demonstrate the efficacy of range-corrected Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) from the WPR in identifying the CBL top, providing crucial insights into its height and dynamics. Average CBL heights during the Meiyu period ranged from 0.9 to 1.4 km, lower than typical tropical values but comparable to other subtropical regions. Furthermore, we examine the influence of ABL height and wind characteristics on Meiyu precipitation, noting that low to moderate wind speeds (around 5-7 m/s) predominantly from the southeasterly or southerly direction are favorable for CBL development in this region. This research underscores the importance of integrated ground-based observations for understanding regional atmospheric processes vital for weather prediction and climate studies.
