Title

Smartphone Usage, Sleep Quality, and Academic Performance of Grade 12 Students

Abstract

This study examined the influence of smartphone usage on sleep quality and academic performance among Grade 12 students of Pambuhan National High School, Garchitorena District, Division of Camarines Sur during the school year 2024–2025. Specifically, it investigated the levels of smartphone usage, sleep quality, and academic performance in Physical Education; the relationships between smartphone usage and both sleep quality and academic performance; the extent of influence of smartphone use on these variables; and proposed intervention strategies based on the findings. Utilizing a descriptive-correlational design, data were collected from 120 students through a researcher-made questionnaire, documentary analysis, and unstructured interviews. Statistical tools included Weighted Mean, Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient, and Coefficient of Determination. Results indicated a high level of smartphone usage (AWM = 3.51) and suboptimal sleep quality (AWM = 3.47). Academic performance remained commendable, with 44.44% of students attaining grades between 90–100. Significant correlations were found between smartphone usage for specific purposes (academic, communication, entertainment, gaming) and dimensions of sleep quality, with r-values ranging from 0.88 to 0.99 (p < 0.05). However, no significant relationship was established between smartphone usage and academic performance. The extent of influence of smartphone use on sleep quality was substantial (r² = 65% to 99%), whereas its influence on academic performance was weaker (r² = 0% to 63%). The findings underscore the adverse effects of excessive non-academic smartphone use on students’ sleep, which may indirectly affect academic focus. Accordingly, the study recommends the implementation of mindful smartphone use practices and sleep hygiene education to enhance student well-being and academic outcomes.
