Title

Utilization of Locally Available Rice Husk Ash in the Development of M20 Green Concrete

Abstract

This study investigates the potential of locally sourced rice husk ash (RHA), an abundant agricultural byproduct in rice-producing regions like India, as a sustainable partial replacement for cement in M20 grade green concrete. RHA was incorporated at 15% by weight to replace Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), aiming to reduce the environmental impact of concrete production while ensuring structural integrity. The experimental program evaluated the performance of RHA-blended concrete through workability (slump test), compressive strength (at 7, 14, and 28 days), split tensile strength (at 28 days), and flexural strength (at 14 and 28 days), compared against a conventional M20 control mix. The mix design followed a 1:1.5:3 ratio (cement:fine aggregate:coarse aggregate) with a water-cement ratio of 0.45, and 20% additional water to compensate for RHA’s high absorption. Results showed that RHA concrete achieved a 28-day compressive strength of 21.50 MPa—surpassing the M20 requirement (20 MPa), though 6.4% below the control (22.97 MPa). Split tensile strength was 3.245 MPa (3.3% lower), and flexural strength was 3.25 MPa (3.0% lower), both within structural limits. Workability dropped by 20% (60 mm vs. 75 mm) but remained acceptable. Economically, the 15% RHA replacement reduced cement costs by 10–15%; environmentally, it cut CO₂ emissions (which cement contributes 8% globally) and managed rice husk waste, reducing pollution. This RHA-blended M20 green concrete is viable for pavements, low-rise buildings, and rural infrastructure—offering a sustainable solution by balancing performance, cost-efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
