Title

ROBOTIC ARM FOR BIOMEDICAL WASTE SORTING USING AI

Abstract

This study focuses on developing an automated biomedical waste management system using a robotic arm integrated with YOLOv5 image recognition and UV-C light sterilization. This system uses a camera module and the YOLO (You Only Look Once) algorithm to detect and classify biomedical waste such as gloves, syringes, , glass bottles and vials in real-time. Once classified, a robotic arm controlled by arduino, performs pick and place operations to sort the waste into dedicated colour bins. To make it even more safe and ensure maximum hygiene, the sorted waste is exposed to UV-C light, which effectively sterilizes the waste materials by neutralizing harmful pathogens. The integration of artificial intelligence and automation in this system reduces human intervention, reduces the risk of infectious diseases to workers, increases efficiency and improves accuracy in waste sorting . This project focus on SDG 12 and not only enhances the safety of waste handling procedures but also contributes to sustainable and hygienic biomedical waste management practices.
