Title
Abstract
Study was conducted to estimate the prevalence and correlates of substance abuse among adolescents. Random sampling was used to select 317 school children of grade IX, X, XI, XII of selected schools and colleges in Chittoor.Chi square test was used to test the association between substance abuse and its correlates among adolescents studying in selected schools and colleges.The study showed that among 317 school children, majority were boys 193(61%), majority of students were found to be in grade XII 99(31%). The majority of school children were using energy drink like red bull, sting 125(30%) and few children also used other substances like nicotine 32(10%), alcohol 41(13%), pain relievers for non-medical 23(7%), and other substance 10(3%).The findings of the study showed that the school children were using substances like nicotine, alcohol, energy drinks, ganja and other substances. Some of the reasons given by the children were friends, relieving stress, to know the taste of substance and pleasure. This study results may create awareness regarding substance abuse and measures to be taken to prevent and control substance abuse among school children.
